Bridge over Municipality of Augusta

Total collapse of a motorway/national road viaduct near Augusta (Siracusa, Sicily) on 24 June 2006, caused by the impact of a heavy goods vehicle that struck the structure. One person was killed and 14 were injured in the collapse. The event occurred on a valley-crossing viaduct in the Augusta industrial port area. Augusta is a major industrial hub with significant heavy vehicle traffic, and the area has historically been served by the SS114 and the developing A18 corridor. The collapse prompted investigations by the Procura di Siracusa.
