Bridge over Via dei Giovi
Partial collapse (severe structural damage requiring full demolition and rebuilding) of the overpass on the SP 32 Novedratese at km 8.890 in Carimate (Como, Lombardy) on 18 March 2019, caused by the impact of a heavy goods vehicle transporting an excavator with an oversized load that struck the intrados of the bridge while travelling on the underlying via dei Giovi. All RC carrying beams were damaged, with rebar severed along the entire span. The Provincia di Como ordered the immediate total closure of the Novedratese for a minimum of three months and proceeded with demolition and full reconstruction of the bridge deck. No fatalities or injuries were reported. The closure caused severe traffic disruption across the Canturino and Brianza areas for several months.
