Viadotto Petrulla

Total collapse of a span of the Viadotto Petrulla on the SS626 national road in the contrada Petrulla, territory of Licata (Agrigento, Sicily) on 7 July 2014. The bridge deck collapsed downward from a height of approximately 4 metres due to sudden failure of the prestressed concrete carrying beams, splintering at mid-span. Two vehicles were involved in the incident: four people sustained minor injuries, including a pregnant woman who was airlifted to hospital in Caltanissetta as a precaution. ANAS immediately established an internal investigation commission. The Procura di Agrigento opened a criminal investigation. The event was subsequently cited by CNR-ITC as a significant example of prestressed concrete failure in Italian bridge infrastructure, comparable to the later Fossano (2017) collapse.
