Ponte Morandi

On 14 August 2018 at 11:36, a section of the Polcevera Viaduct (Morandi Bridge), including pylon 9 and adjacent deck sections, collapsed in Genoa. The event caused 43 fatalities and 11 injuries. The motorway viaduct was a prestressed-concrete cable-stayed structure opened in 1967. The first-instance court press release dated 17 July 2026 identified a system of defects in the upper part of the Genoa-sea stay of pylon 9 as the origin of the failure; the full written reasons were pending at the curation date.
