ARCUS Atlas record

Ponte dell'Industria

Total collapse of a lateral service gallery of the Ponte dell'Industria (Ponte di Ferro) over the Tevere river in Rome on the night of 2-3 October 2021, triggered by a large fire that started from makeshift encampments beneath the bridge and spread to gas and electrical service conduits running along the structure. A lateral pedestrian and utility gallery approximately 50 metres long collapsed into the river; the main vehicular deck, though severely damaged, did not collapse. No fatalities or injuries were reported. The bridge, built in 1863 and an important connection between the Ostiense and Marconi districts, was reopened to vehicles on 12 December 2021 following emergency repairs.
